  7.     The U.S. Border Patrol thinks Operation Desert Storm may
  8. explain why the number of Latin Americans caught trying to
  9. cross the border from Mexico declined dramatically in late
  10. January. In Laredo and Del Rio, Texas, border arrests were down
  11. as much as 40%, compared with the same month a year ago.
  12. Arrests in Yuma, Ariz., decreased 30%. Immigration officials
  13. say Mexico is rife with rumors that the U.S. government is
  14. drafting illegal aliens and shipping them off to fight in the
  15. war. The prospect of combat hasn't deterred some Mexican
  16. nationals already living in the U.S., however, from trying to
  17. join the military. Army recruiters contend the aliens attempt
  18. to enlist, mistakenly believing they can obtain citizenship.
